The LOTW Diary- Hoops 0 Fawkirk 1

Blur V Oasis…It’s 1994 Again.

So GS team 2 has matched the feat of the legendary Luigi era at CP when his team of charlatans, journeymen and the not very guid went 3 matches withoot a win or a bloody goal. Fact is Kenny Miller would fit perfectly into that side, as would GS management and tactical ability if the last two games are anything to go by.

Withoot a clue is an understatement.

But, then it was different. Then it was terminal, now, for me, it is a blip that has been coming for months. We were always going to end up paying for oor indifferent performances and the fact that we are too inconsistent in front of goal. Oor lack of creativity and the reliance on oor flair players was always going to come undone. Mind you, we pay oor flair players to produce but they are always going to lose form.

The last time we lost at Fawkirk, it was at the sesh pool that was Brockville and funnily enough was in 1994. An intimidating place where if you didnae fancy it you got a shooing. Westfield is another hell hole but in a different way. In no way is it intimidating, surreal but not intimidating.

You have to ask ourselves did we fancy it? It didnae seem so.

GS yer having a laugh

Wie this quote……

"On a good day, on a better finishing day, a better decision day, we'd have won the game easily.
"It just seemed to be 90 minutes of making chances and dominating."
"So it's concerning just now, but what I'm not concerned about is the attitude of the players," added Strachan.
"We're having a problem time in terms of results right now, but we've not got a real problem in terms of our attitude or the way we're playing."

Was he watching the same game as us? His “dominating and making chances” quote is the funniest thing I have heard in years. Yes, possession wise we dominated but creating chances? We had a few before they scored but after that, apart from the few half shouts for pens, we were left to hump aimless balls into the box for centre forwards who never showed or looked interested all day.

What was the plan B? Well oor ending formation reeked of a punter who has lost his wages on a Thursday night and was doon to his last fiver. He needed a big win so he backs a rank outsider so that he has sheckles to take hame to the wife.

Hartley in a back three, Elvis upfront, Lenny still on the park, looking back it was chaos. The team lack shape and cohesion and urgency. There was no oot the box thinking from the coaching staff yesterday just a kind of forlorn hope that the changes might have worked. Sometimes they have worked this year and credit where credit is due but last weeks 2nd performance and yesterdays 2nd half performance was well embarrassing wie the riches we have on the park.

And that’s all doon to attitude. But GS is happy wie that……

Walk a Million Miles

Oor lack of centre forwards is coming home to roost. We have been creating chances for months and not taking them. In the last wee blip we had- the series of drawn games in December- not killing of teams was the problem. Thing is now when you are not playing well you maybe only get one or two chances and do us and the players trust the strikers to take them?

If Kenny Miller wisnny Scottish the meeja would be ranking him alongside Sebo, Van Vossen etc. he is that bad I think the green brigade should add him to their banner. GS has been proved he was right to drop him but why recall him? He offers nothing to the team expect an outlet ball. Even then he loses it.

Hate to say but oor doubts have been proved right aboot oor Kenny.

And where the hell is Derek Rioirdan? Natural finisher was in a great run of form before he got injured and he can sniff oot a chance like Kate Moss can sniff oot an indie superstar in a sweaty nightclub. Wisnny quoted yesterday. Maybe he was at Hampden right enough….

Now I’m one to eat humble pie or any sort of pie, so here it goes, it we hadn’t sold Hartson we would have won the league by today. The style we try and play and the amount of aimless balls we put in the box would have been cannon fodder for the big fellow. Hell, it we had someone like Boydchenko the league would have been wrapped up by now. Think I’ve took that too far there.

But it's clear where or troubles are and maybe the midfield have been getting a raw deal.

Paddy Cregg

After ma slice of humble pie, still huvnae mentioned Jaro yet, cast yer mind back to January and when we lost oot on the Hibee twins. I said Patrick Cregg was always ma first choice for the wee nark role as, well I’m not beating aboot the bush, he is one of us.

Yesterday proved again he could add something to oor midfield. With Lenny being increasingly petulant I feel wee Paddy could be the perfect replacement. I mean we replace one Irish hot heid for a younger, quicker and less ginger version. Jobs a guid un I say.

International Week.

With two weeks before the next game we have time to dwell on oor crisis. For me this break comes at the wrong time and the build up to the united game will heap pressure on the team. In fact the Dundee Utd game is now monumental and a must win.

I hate being hard on the team. Moaning during success makes me feel, well, hunish. The team have done superbly getting us to this position where we can lose two league games in a row and it really disnny matter. They have shown tremendous attitude to pull us oot of the mire at times but that isnny always going to work. Defeats make you question things that you always doubted anyway.

Think it has also proved that even though GS has afforded himself leeway to build team 3 his vision of team two has failed to materialise. We will win the league and more inlikley the double but the doubts that we should being doing so much better in a better style remain.

We all know we can’t play well in every game. We know we can’t win every game. I think all we want to see is a bit of effort and style. Unfortunately style disnny always win things.

Next two weeks are going to be long so I’m going to go for a boat trip wie Freddie Flintoff to see if we can find the ghost of wee jinky. Mair interesting than internationals anyway.

Forza the stuttering hoops

I think our manager is like many others who like to think that they know something that we don`t. When a thing is obvious to the fans they refuse to see it, remember MON in the run-in two years ago? Of course you do!
The good thing is that Dundee United won on Saturday and will want to play as well again so they won`t give us the war of attrition stuff, or will they. :-/
Every team goes through sticky times, it`s how they recover that`s important!
I hope that JVoHs injury is short term! :-)

As I mentioned before, Celtic don`t have a strongest team, that has helped them cope brilliantly from injuries but has also led to disjointed performances.
Being bullied? Last season there was Keano, mess the Bhoys about and spend the summer in rehab! The protection from refs will not be there so we have to toughen up. You`ll notice that refs find it easy to book Celts but give chance after chance to the hammer throwers. How often do you see a bookable offence unpunished v the Celts?
Every week!

oh ayes,
prior to Saturday Dundee United had only beaten St Mirren (cup and league) this year. Thank goodness they had that win. After their last big win v Aberdeen (31/12/06) ,3-1, they lost 5 to Falkirk. Also lost to, Rangers(0-5), ICT (twice) and Killie. Hibs and Motherwell draws. Just keeping my mind active until the next game. :-/
Come on the Bhoys!

Hey Ian
"Anoraks'R'Us" :o)
It's going to be a long 2 weeks right enough.

I also think we are lightweight and do get bossed due to lack of protection from the refs.
Maybe the fans at Celtic Park have got a role to play here & need to start giving refs a real roasting if they're not up to their job. The captain too but I don't think ours has any credibility left. If Mick is out next match & Lenny is on the bench, give the armband to Elvis.

One thing I noticed about the French crowd at SdeFr on Saturday, they really influenced the referee (clearly at the yellow card incident when the crowd were baying for S.Lamont's blood and he duly obliged - didnae matter that it was his brother that made the bad tackle -- and there was no way he was going to refuse THAT try...).

Blogger ianinjesi said...

That wasn`t even a bad tackle the French guy took a dive!
We are getting pushed around and WE KNOW that the ref will never back us up so we need to get tough in a smart way.
16 fouls by Celtic, (9 against Gow!), 4 bookings and a red card.

Rangers (v Aberdeen) 15 fouls 0 bookings
Have you ever seen a team come to Celtic Park, throw it about and get 4 bookings?
Oh aye another fact about Dundee United, in their last 11 games they have lost 6 goals, apart from Saturday the highest scoring match had been 1-1 v Motherwell with losses to ICT(twice) and Killie by 1-0.

Remember though, we are Celtic!

It`s actually gonna be 3-0 to us because they broke the spell by winning 4-0 at the Swine Sloss.

Kevin, I hope your thing last week about 'title party' doesn't come back to haunt us.

I'm still confident - seven 0-0 draws should be be sufficient (maybe Ian a.k.a Mr Stats could confirm?).

Yup, 7 0-0 scores would give the necessary 81pts.
Of course at the moment it`s 83 points required. Winning a few games(3 at least) would do me.
Spurs v Chelsea on TV. Sheva and Ballack= Jiri and the Gravedigger?

Ian I hope you are right and we get a decent performance. Al i want to see is some commitment and at present I am not seeing it by players who earn more in two/three weeks than I earn in a year. I find that galling.

I still think we will win this league at a cantor but my main gripe is that what we are watching is not entertaining.

I do think that we have some seeds of a potentially exciting team of local talent. However I do not understand the reasons behind our tactics and substitutions sometimes.

I just get so annoyed when I read the Ostrich thinking on CQN everyday.

We have a great brand product that we as a club need to export more than anyother due to our lack of TV money. That is our Scots/Irish identity, our Hoops and our Exciting/attacking tradition of football. Those customers that we have who provide those extra funds which allow us to buy Graveson or Jiri (whether they are any good or not) need to be entertained no matter what Paul on CQN and all the other of the Collective think. Are we doing it at present.

Nope.

While in London on Paddy's day, I saw countless Japanese tourists wearing Celtic related clobber. Are we going to keep them interested when Naka leaves. Probably not, but any chance we have with even a few remaining interested will be lost if we do not entertain them more.

Please just play and show a bit of fight. Don't mind how we do it but I want to know at least that our players tried their best.

I agree with the play and show some fight comment. Hartley is one who we should be able to count on but he`s still finding his feet after the 2 game ban.
Faster, fitter, stronger means easier games than we are seeing. Twelve more days of worry. :-)

I`ve got a ticket for the Scotland match but I would be kidding if i said I was looking forward to it. The only game I`m thinking about is the Tannadice game a week later. A large number of the team are away for the internationals but enough of the squad will be resting in wait. Wilson will hopefully recover from his knee injury, he`ll be useful v his old club!

aye mate he is struggling badly.

i think he is an excellant player as well but if fit i would go for telfer.

i don't agree 100% with the naka prefers telfer thing but i do think telfer had been playing well and wilson is struggling at the minute.

the doumbe situation is a weird one as well isn't it.

if everyone is fit for utd i think the team must be:

boruc

telfer
naylor
odea
pressley

naka
lennon
hartley
mcgeady

jvofh
zurawski

with riordan on the bench and 1st man to come on if we need a goal.

Looks good Seven but it`s what they can do on the pitch.
I agree that Wilson has struggled and I think that Telfer being injured kept him in against Falkirk.
Hopefully Zurawski can get into his stride quickly.

hope so ian and no one gets injured.

do we know wot stage jvofh is at fitness wise.

Seven, I would make one important change: Frosty in for Lenny.

Possibly, start with Riorden up with Jan and bring on Majic, if Deek doesn't click. But that's just tinkering.

The big thing for me is that, more than ever, we need a dynamic midfield. For me, with Neil we are too static. Love the guy, but his good days are few and far between now.

I saying that, GS selections (and substitutions) are notoriously hard to fathom.
I remember when Pearson was still here and I was sure that he couldn't possibly start him again 'cos he was duff in the last match, and yet there he was...
I'm sure if Virgo was still hanging about, he would be in as well.
So no doubt we will see KM up front as usual !

i was thinking about riordan instead of magic but i just don't think he is ever going to be given a chance upfront for some reason which is a shame.

i think from now to the end of the season fitness permitting it should be jvofh along with either magic or deek.

aye maybe sno as lennon was poor once rangers scored and like everyone else against falkirk as well.

i think tho we need his influence as we are already without big mick for the utd game.

surely jarosik, miller and beattie will be dropped.

someone on here mentioned we can be bullied now by teams which i agree with and levein's teams main strengh is usually bullying and harassing the opposition so we must be up for this one 100%.

i think hartley owes us a big performance. i think he is a really good player but has yet to take a game by the scruff of the neck since signing for us.

mcgeady must play ahead of jarosik as he is the one player we have who wants to run at players with any pace.

I think JVoH is away with the Dutch squad but remember what happened to Bobby Petta when he joined with them, we rarely saw him play again!
Jan is the man!

nah ian he was left out due to his injury.

yes whenever petta got called up he got injured.

just voted for my player of the year, young player and goal of the season on the official site.

went for:

boruc player of the year

mcgeady young player of the year

naka v man utd at parkhead goal of the season.

wots your thoughts lhads.

Agree with your selection althogh DO'D could be in with a shout for YPOTY.

Is it a sign of the times that our goalie is POTY ?

Can't go against your votes Kevin.

Agree totally though also think thta had D O'D played a few more games then he would possibly be in with a shout with Aiden. As it is though Aiden deserves the call IMO.

I always enjoyed Tannadeachie as an away trip when I travelled up on the HWEUCSC bus. Straight up the East Coast easy run. The last game of Dr. Joe's reign up there when Sieb D played his last in goal (as a sub) for the Arabs, was one of the funniest experiences i ever had as a Hoop away from home.

JVOH defo lefty out of the Dutch Squad BTW. Van Basten has brought in the AZ Aalkmaar centre forward as a replacement.

normally i would be deeply offended being mixed up with kev haha but i will let u away with it seeing u were putting the kids to bed.

kev has been strangely quiet today. mrs g must have put the foot down or he must have been busy for a change in work.

i was considering o'dea but thought for amount of games played and his start to the season it had to be aiden but agree o'dea looks a great prospect.

sixtaeseven i was thinking that as well reg it being a sign of the times when i was voting for boruc.

i remember that dykstra game as well baldy, it was hilarious.

hail hail.

Last week I voted for McGeady as POTY, because he puts his neck on the line without any protection from refs. It was a close thing between him and Boruc and Artur doesn`t need the confidence boost. :-)
Naka has been good but I`d like to see a bit more at times, on the 31st of March for example. I`m still thinking about the other categories.
A post on CQN hinted that GS did his own version of a teacup rant to the players after Falkirk.
