Call The Cops…

And it’s not for the Man U casuals being naughty in the city centre. No there’s been a robbery in Glesga’s east end. Dick Turpin, Robin Hood and some wee ginger naff were last seen leaving the vicinity around 9.30pm last night with a swag of 3 points and untold millions.

And wasn’t it BLOODY FANTASTIC.

Right we were murdered all over the park. It was like an episode of Taggart oot their at times. Mare bodies and mare chasing shadows than Glesga’s finest. Man U proved to us they are the BENCHMARK, which we must aim. Money will stop us getting there but a look at there set up drove home a few home truths.

I’ve never respected Man U as a fitbaw team. After seeing them last night they are on different level from us. One of the best teams to grace CP in European competition. One and all they were better than us in every single area of the park. One and all had pace, all had a 1st touch to die for and all never once treated the ball like a hot tattie.

Their midfield proved that we are so slow in that area it was like formula one verses go karting at butlins. It was a non-contest and if it were a boxing match would have been stopped after the 1st round. But then again if you make it easy for class to rise to the top then you’re in for a hiding. Well you should but, then again

GS made it easy for them to strut, pose and preen. He needs his baws booted for the starting line up. If Man U could have been bothered the game should have been loused by half time due to a tactical blunder by wee ginge.

If he wanted to play 2 sitting midfielders then why did he not just go with a 4-5-1 to start with and keep the natural width? His own admission of square pegs in round holes is an understatement. Oor team in the 1st half couldnae live with Man U. We couldnae get the baw and when we did we gave it straight back or hoofed up into the channels for a runner that was never there.

Oh, how the mancs and meeja doomsayers were laughing at this point. They were watching a team dominate their lesser cousins- now twice removed and barred from all family functions- and in their notions of winning the big cup this was a routine 3 points.

How wrong could they be. They weren’t creating. It was the most one-sided 0-0 I have ever had the pleasure to witness. It was only a pleasure as the longer the game went on the more I saw a draw as a fantastic result. A win was unthinkable.

2nd half was slightly better, with Jaro and Shaun giving them problems and the fact we had flooded the midfield stopped Man U having complete control. I don’t care that we were at home and we should have been attacking GS knows he made a mistake with his starting 11. He had the guts to admit this and changed. He GOT LUCKY AS IT WORKED. Man U over cooked things while we were just waiting for that chance and it came…

A free kick won from an impressive dive by an eastern European coached on how to win free kicks in Europe. Never a free kick then the ref, who had a mare and showed that BIG teams do get a high % decisions their way, gave it as most European ref’s do.

Up stepped oor Japanese bhoy. Surely he couldnae again. Peach of a strike, peach of a goal. The gloating mancs were now dumbstruck this was Copenhagen all over again for them. There was 10 mins left plus injury time as the parkheid bounce stopped a nervous air descended we had been here before within touching distance of the holy grail. Like Indian Jones except those pesky Nazis have got a tank and are ready to let it loose on you.

And they did. Rio up front, O’Shea up front reeks of desperation to me. Saha missed a sitter before the ref done his Man U credentials the world of guid with THAT award. In the mellay that followed after the dumfound ness of the emotions being felt I saw something that embarrassed me to be a Celtic fan. A show of unsporting-ness that blackened the name of oor club.

In the moment Neil Lennon booted the ball from the pen spot I then understood why people claim it’s his attitude and style they don’t like, not the fact he is an Ulsterman playing for the hoops. It was the most petulant, acting like a wean, spoilt brat ness I have ever seen. If he had been sent off for it I would have been bloody glad. Then oor club would have had to take action against him. That moment will sour my memory of a great night.

But Arfur ensured that it would be looked over. Was confident the pole in the goal could save it. If he went the right way then there is a guid chance he would save it. And he did. Bedlam. Cue bloody bedlam. I thought the roof was coming of the place. The memory of Lyon disappeared from oor thoughts and WE KNEW THAT WE WERE GOING TO QUALIFY.

On a night when we deserved the some total on zero from the game, in what was oor worst performance at home in Europe since Blackburn how did we do it. How did GS mould a team of Bosmans, middle order signings and honest journey men get us into the last 16? How did he do something ST Martin never could?

Well I’m sure MON was sitting in his mansion wondering the same thing. But a closer look at it makes it simple. If Martin knew a goalie from arse then we would have qualified long before noo and I would have a UEFA cup winners 2003 tattoo on ma leg.

I’m not going to get into the argument over if oor’s is better than there’s it just means that GS and his team of talented but not in the top drawer players will have a footnote in Celtic’s history. And that’s something you don’t get everyday.

Now you may think I’m a bit doon on the performance and not carried away. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’m over the bloody moon. It was one of the best nights ever at CP. History will show that we won the game and fergie was sent back doon the M6 with a boot up his arse. We have over achieved and it’s a bloody great achievement one that I will remember for the rest of ma life.

But I think last night proved that we are a long way off dining at that level or competing at that level on a regular basis. But I will take the day in the sun while it lasts. Now how does that Fratellies song go again?.

FORZA CELTIC

What game were you watching mate?

I see your trying to give an open opinion on the game... but your sounding more like Charlie Nicholas or Murdo McLeod... Jesus even Ally McCoist gave Celtic more credit than you have.

Yes they were slicker than us in posession but that was about it, they made nothing of it, neither side was any use in the last third, in fact MU, considering how much of the ball they had were bloody awful up-front. So if MU were so bloody good and didn't manage to score a single goal, (something even the poorest SPL teams have been able to do against us this season) doesn't that mean Celtic did something right? Domestically MU have scored 29 in 13 games yet couldn't score against "a team of Bosmans, middle order signings and honest journey men"

Wayne Rooney??? How many millions did he cost? The only time he featured last night was when he pulled Lenny down from behind in a "petulant, acting like a wean, spoilt brat ness"

Gie yer heid a shake man, enjoy it and put the picket down

Think you were a bit hard on Lenny, I can see why he was thinking "here we go again"

The bhoys did us proud, yup they were better man for man, yup GS got it wrong but we changed it, turned it up and scored the goal that counted.

Post xmas euro trips are us ma man!

Well said The Bald Ego

Bit harsh Kevin.

We were far better in the second half and although didn't create many clear cut chances, how many did Man U create?

Once again the media are giving it.
"Manchester United were woeful infront of goal and should have hammered Celtic"
They said similair things after both Benfica and Copenhagen home games.

Maybe just maybe it was because we didn't let them. Granted there were a few dodgy moments were big Artur had to dig us out a hole but we were up agianst the best the EPL has to offer. That's three CL home games and three wins. 5 goals for and none against. We must be doing something right. It can't just be luck, poor finishing or whatever you want to call it. Maybe, just maybe, we actually deserve it. Yes? No?! The way the Old Traford game went I think a little fortune was more than deserved.

Anyway what about Telfer and Naylor? I thought they were great. No better than that, they were fantastic. Also big Jiri looked like the player we always thought he could and should be last night. Well done sir. Unfortunately Bobo terrified me and if MON wants him he can have him. Good player but he will always give you bombscare moments. So long and thanks for all the great memories.

Now to beat Copenhagen away just to get the damn monkey off our backs.

Welcome the bald ego- how’s yer brother? and Positive add on.

Bald Ego- my praise of the performance was maybe lost in my praise of Man Yoo. Both you and Arctic are correct man yoo did create he haw a point I did make in the review and I also did praise GS for changing it but as all tactical changes go there is some luck involved if they come off.

The second half we were better yes granted but still never created anything and luckly for us either did man u. But that is just one game…

OVERALL I FEEL WE HAVE DESERVED TO GO THROUGH FOR A TREMENDOUS 3 WINS AT HOME WITHOUT LOSING A GOAL. THE PLAYERS AND COACHES DESERVE ALSO FOR THEIR EFFORTS.

Also feel we deserve to go through because at OT we were unlucky and for past years when oor luck ran oot.. Now last night we GOT a result which makes sure we don’t have to endure a nerve wreaking last day. AND WE BLOODY DESERVE THAT.:-)

But I’m not going to say last night rated as a great hoop performance but it did rate as great historic night for the hoops. I for one will never forget the scene at the final whistle and I thought the hertz game was guid.

I will remember the result and the outcome but the memory of the performance will fade. And I bloody glad we stuck it up the greatest league in the world again. Come and have a go if you think ur hard enough EPL boys:-)

Correct a mondo- Lee Naylor is a find. a true star MOTM by a week last night.and the Telf mastered Giggs. But how much has big Mick came on? But bobo….anyone fancy driving him doon the M6?

Never thought I would say that we missed Caldwell but we did miss his passing from the back.

Positive- Enjoy the gig and ye euro jaunts after xmas don’t you just luv em.

Hail Hail

Fair enough, but wouldn't it have been easier to say the result was nicer than the performance? Rather than go off on one about "our team of Bosmans, middle order signings and honest journey men"

We deserve to go through because in the good old fashioned home and away style we were better than Man United- FACT. May not have played the prettier football but thats not what wins the trophies (otherwise Arsenal would be champions of the world)

Our draw in the Nou Camp (JFK's night), is an example that your report would be more fitting for, when that was nothing but balls, and balls under seige at that, but last night we matched MU for determination, and there was no seige. We didnt create as much as we would have liked but we stopped them even getting close.

I'd play Bobo in Copenhagen and hope he has a stormer, otherwise we'll get hee haw for him next year, one high profile game to squeeze some shillings out of him

Entertaining discussion,guys!
I love the Champions League games but I dislike the philosophy behind it. The emphasis on the big clubs from the big countries and the constant talk of money. Clubs from the smaller countries should never be apologetic for achieving some success. The unfortunate refs are working to a script, remember Thierry Henry`s comments after Moscow about Arsenal not being recognised as a big club?
It`s great that we will play to reach the last eight. It will be good experience for the players and nice for the fans. Okay the atmosphere is partly enhanced by drink but it was really exciting finish to the match and most stayed right to the end. It made for a great memory and what a goal!
Forza Celtic senz`altro! :-)

I was thinking about the Lennon reaction to the penalty and the pitch vandalism by Gravesen just as Saha was running up.
Not the Celtic way, chaps!

The Reserves beat Hearts 4-1 and Riordan scored 3! That should book his place in the squad for Sunday. Oh aye, at last a ref who treated Hearts to what they deserve. They had 2 sent off and the Bhoys missed a penalty.

The joy of football! Did you see the delight of the young Newcastle United player Steven Taylor after scoring the winner against Celta Vigo? He`s a decent player too!
However I`m glad that we are not going to the UEFA cup because we would be back where we started from in the final 32. Besides there`s an evening class that I fancy doing on Thursdays in the new year. So for me it was any place but 3rd in our CL group.
Sunday will be a tough game and the Caldwell injury may hold up Mark Wilson`s comeback for a wee while. I don`t think GS would want to change two of the back four. We have to attck the centre of the Hibs defence, we have the players to worry them, Another nail biting experience by the radio lies in wait.
Forza Celtic!

After listening to at least 35 minutes of siege I would happily have settled for a draw. I was surprised that people on CQN were bolding up Lenny because on the radio he was the one being overrun. This is happening in just about every away game. When will we be able to match the pace and strength of our opponents in th e1st half of a game? Of course, it could be that these opponents are putting in a special effort against the Bhoys. For example look at the results of Hearts and Falkirk after playing Celtic.
It`s about time the strikers were scoring in away games!
Other than that I`m looking forward to the Aberdeen match next week.
