A Window Of Chance
So as this transfer windae drags and drags with seemingly oor board having short arms and deep pockets it gives you time to have a look at the posturing and posing going on.
Now, teams know other teams are desperate to strengthen or freshen up in their fight against relegation or their quest for a holy grail. Some teams have just changed managers and they new men are trying to stamp their style on their new charges or in some cases return them to an “aye ready” west of Scotland refuge for the ugly and under privileged.
Boards, agents and managers are playing games of poker all up and doon the country with those who don’t have the bottle paying over the top fee’s in their desperation.
West Ham and Charlton in England seem to the main offenders with the reported £70,000 a week the hammers have paid for hatchet man Lucas Neil almost sheer folly.
Oor own St Martin now has cash to burn and even he has been caught up in the melley. At Aston Celtic wie a randy Americans money he is throwing money at the glory hornet boys for an untested 21 year old. I’m glad to see he still has the transfer target list he had at the hoops wie the capture of John Carew from Lyon. Expect a bid for Dwight Yorke at 11.50pm on Jan 31st Villa fans.
Up north the main stooky seems to be aboot whether or not Hibs will let the Hibee Two, The Hibee Twins or the bloody Proclaimers leave this month. Their manager is adamant that they are not going anywhere while his chairmen is strangely maybe more markedly silent.
Now for me John Collins has a cheek. He walk oot on the Easter Road club to further his career then made a fortune being one of the first hootsmen to take advantage of Bosman when leaving us.
For him to bleating and making big noises is like bit like Jock McConnell saying he disnny like a local income tax when 15 years ago he backed a plan for a local income tax.
Collins should know what these players are going through. The last two games Kevin Thomson has been subbed at half time after below par performances. Interesting enough the other twin hasn’t been touched. Does this mean that Thommo wishes a move more or is it just affecting him more?
Wie the players agent coming oot and saying we are talking to Hibs wie regards signing them- dinny trust that McKay though- and the Hibs chairmen silent on the whole affair it makes you wonder if Collins bombast is all hot air and he is already looking forward to a couple of million spend in the summer.
If it goes through it would be a major outlay for us. So far we have got a bosman- Elvis- a Cameroon left back for a nominal fee and have bid just over £100,000 for a 16 year old who today was compared to Mo J*hnston by the original agent orange McMurdo.
The amount of team’s interest in James McCarthy is frightening. Already been on trial at the pool, wie the Chelski heid tapper upper saying he is the most talented 16 year old he has seen in years- is the 1st division really that guid a yard stick to say? - with others stating that his progress is far above his years.
Now how was this fellow missed and he ended up at Hamilton is one question and again its 1st division cloggerville. A journeymen’s dream of a league where the kicks are free.
I think Celtic are hoping to pull on the heart strings- well he has chosen to play for the Republic over Scotland and he looks like Pearo’s younger better looking brother- but is this going to be it?
Is oor transfer windae going to be full of false hope, nominal fees and buying for the future? Are we going to lose the Scottish player of the year to Fulham, as we won’t go up a couple of grand?
By the 31st of Jan these questions should be clearer. Transfer windaes are no guid and should be scrapped. Too much pressure for the powers at be and clubs in trouble both on and off the park. If you have dosh you should be able to spend it when you want. If you need to sell someone then you should be able to when you want.
It would end this fretting up and doon the country. But one thing for sure, by the end of this one we should know if the rumours of the board backing GS to the hilt were true or not.
At the moment they are distinctly in the not category.

The January transfer repair shop may yet yield something for the Bhoys. However the important thing is that if it ain`t broke don`t fix it. The Scottish cup and the ECL provide additional targets to aim for in this part of the season. Meantime winning league matches is the key to success.
I`m sure that plans have been made for improving the team but we may have to wait until the summer.
I usaully agree with the "ain`t broke don`t fix it" but I'm not sure we've got the team that we really want yet.
OK we are miles ahead points-wise in the league and have done OK in the CL, but how many games have we stuttered and stammered our way thru? How many times have recently we wished/prayed for a "performance"?
I think we are in a position to really go a step further.
Bringing in quality players sends out signals to the the rest of the SPL and especially Watties Tartan Terrors.
Also, if we do get quality in now, they can get bedded-in in time for the new season.
It gives us the chance to compare with what we've got and help make decisions about who's got to be unloaded (KM? MZ?, JJ? TG? ...). It gives us time to prepare for the guys who'll be leaving (NL, ...).
It's never the wrong time to bring in real quality...and the right time could be now - just before Milan.
I know where you are coming from but I`m just trying to ignore transfer news and I`m not thinking about the team needing strengthened.
One game at a time. :-)
Thinking about your posts on here I have to admit that it`s strange that the team has still to establish the strongest pairing for defence, midfield and in attack. Of course injury has played it`s part but it also shows the resiliance of this team!
Of course it may be that many teams are in the same situation but Celtic are our concern.
One BIG worry is that Naka and Artur could be away this summer - we will get megabucks but they won't be replaced in a hurry.
The only thing that could keep them at CPark is the pull of the Champions League, 'cos moneywise we can't compete - much as it pains me to say it.
Ian, good point about our strongest defence, midfield and attack. Even if everbody in the squad was fit, I don't think ANYBODY knows what our strongest XI is (although the team could vary a bit according to who we're up against).
Anybody want to propose a line-up?
very tough indeed but i think our strongest line up when everyone is fit is:
boruc
wilson
naylor
pressley/caldwell/mcmanus (whoever is playing better at time)
naka
lennon
tommy g
mcgeady/maloney (whoever is playing better at the time)
jvofh
miller/magic (same again with these two)
i know i have kind of cheated there but was struggling to pick between the 3 at the back for the 2 centre half roles and between aiden and shaun in midfield.
i would also like to see riordan play upfront with jvofh or at least get a chance there but don't think it will happen.
hopefully the big cameroonian boy will be good. seemingly he can play anywhere at the back which is an excellant option to have.
incidently regarding the young boy mccarthy he was with celtic as a youngster but was let go but hopefully we get him back.
I remember a Scotland u15 schoolboy international when Tommy Craig and Kenny Dalglish played. It was another 5years before KD made it to the Celtic 1st team. Three years before that Sheffield Wednesday paid Aberdeen £100,000 for TC.
Haven`t Celtic got a couple of starlets already, McGovern and McGlinchey?
wilson is already excellant mate, i cant believe u would play telfer ahead of him in the starting 11.
i think wilson is best right back in scotland by a mile and will only get better.
hopefully naka and boruc stay.
Not easy but here's mine:
Artur
-->we're going to miss him next year...
wilson
Mick
Caldwell
naylor
-->very young back four but can only get better - had to think hard about Gary after the Benfica nightmare.
naka
lennon
Tg
shaun
-->how many will still be there next season? Frosty adequate replacement for NL though.
jvofh
Beats
-->I think Magic has lost it & KM could be for the off.
According to CQN this could be an important day regarding the Shaun Maloney contract.
Maybe he`ll be offered Celtic shares! :-)
There was a game near to the end of last season, Hibs at home?, where Wilson was at right back until a late switch. I thought he was better at left back, especially as his crossing was starting to move into the `not bad` category.
The Telfmeister does make great runs, sometimes so sleekit he must be wearing slippers. The final pass is often too final though! :-) I agree that Naka works better with the Telf but he would over time be just as good with Mark Wilson.
I`ll go for Boruc
Telf, Pressley, O`Dea, Naylor
Naka, Gravesen, Jiri, McGeady
JanVenn Beattie
until the next game!
Mick is a hero! I`m glad I don`t have to pick the team. Lenny may come in for Aiden and Sno deserves a game too. Riordan can contribute with goals. It`s getting complicated!!!
I won`t say that the team is all that good but there is competition for places.
ICT will always be a hard game!
Games as from now must be with Milan in mind, so we need to start playing with settled midfield. So could be:
naka
lennon
Tg
McG
But, in saying that, I think we've still got to get the mix right...
However, with ITC, Livingston, Hibs & Aberdeen coming up - hope we can keep the injuries to a minimum. Still, Mick and especially NL should be well rested.
Good to see JJPD in as defensive backup. But is this the usual wee Chick crap:
"BBC Sport understands that Celtic will pay the French club £400,000."
For a loan deal till the end of the season? - aye right, Chick.
PS
Anything new on the wee Shaun front?

the last thing big jvofh needs before the milan game is rests lads.
he needs games, games and more games to get him up to 100% or as close to as possible, he even said tham himself.
lennon is a must for sunday as well and i would be shocked if he didn't start.
Something on the radio (it could have been sports news :-/) that the `tic have offered £4m for the Hibs twosome and they won`t move until the summer.
Of course both players have already bought new houses and cars in anticipation of moving now! Gulp! :-)
Happy Friday to y`all!
Come on the Bhoys!
