99 Problems But The Midfield Isn't One
Last Sunday was laying on the couch dying from self-abuse on the Saturday night. While doing the hungover channel hop I came across “Madrid” a film about the galacticos on ESPN Classic. Now the blurb said a fascinating insight into the world of the worlds biggest club Real Madrid.
All it really showed you was Raul on the treatment table and them joking around in training. One of the games in training was hitting a dead ball from near the corner flag off the far post into the net. In the group doing it were Zizou, Fat Ronnie, Boaby Carlos and our Tommy Gravesen.
Zizou 1st up and missed. Fat Ronnie hit the bar, Boaby Carlos kills a Japanese tourist and our Tommy strolls up pings the ball perfectly off the inside of the post into the back of the net.
So what type of player are we getting? Is it a combative defensive “eat your weans, dug and wife for breakfast” type midfielder or an attacking replacement for the sulky Bulgur? And how will he fit in to what is an already over crowded midfield?
After our dealings this summer we now have 10 midfielders. Jaroisk, Nakamura, Gravesen, Lennon, Sno, Pearson, Thompson, Rioirdon, Maloney and McGeady. If you add other 1st team squad members Ferry and Grant, maybe Quinn, then we have more midfielders than spurs.
So how do we fit them all in? Last Saturday I was dreaming of a combination of Tommy G, Stan and Jaro with a.n. Other in the middle of the park as I was sure MON didn’t have the dimes to purchase him. That midfield for me was a dream.
Have said on this site, no matter how often Lenny states GS told him he has a big role to play, a bit part role and more instances like Tynecastle where Neil will find himself on the bench will be the norm. He will get dusted down for battle games and left out in the wide-open flowing games that happen at CP.
Tommy G according to David Moyes and Evertonians is an attacking midfielder who played for Hamburg, Real Madrid and Denmark as a defensive midfielder. Jaro played as a wide man, defensive midfielder and an attacking midfielder for CSKA and Chelski.
We have paid big money for both of these players so in the most instance they will play and could we see them swapping roles in a dynamic midfield that when one goes the other sits? Both can play, both are comfortable on the ball and have more creativity than Lenny. Both seem more flexible than Lenny so both will play more than Lenny.
Pearo having come back into the managers good books, could be the biggest loser in the signing of Tommy G. Having seen an opportunity with Stan leaving he was probably hoping that the who ha surrounding the supposed failed medical was true and a run in the team was on the cards.
Having impressed over the last few weeks the 21st century Burns could find himself an utility bit part, filling in wide left when Naka doesn’t fancy it or late sub when Tommy G or Jaro fancy a rest.
Our wide midfielders must also be a bit worried about GS plans. I mean he could play 3 centre midfielders and a player in the hole behind the front 2 or more in likely force one of the central midfielders, would be Jaro, to play wide.
Not our favoured option as it unbalances the team, but big names, big money means bigger huffs when they are not playing.
With Aiden the only wide player who ‘s performances so far make him a stick on start, then Naka, Shaun and the missing Rioirdon could find themselves up beside me in the stand more often than not.
The midfield options are suited to what I believe will be our CL 4-5-1 formation. Domestically some are going to be disappointed as it might be horses for courses and they may find themselves left out when they don’t want to be. But if GS does this and rotates the engine room, I fully expect disjointed performances to follow.
GS has given himself a massive dilemma, albeit a good one to have, and also will leave himself open to all sorts of abuse if his team selections fall sort of the now over expectant targets. In the coming months all you will hear is this one should have played, that one should have played etc.
If only at the moment we had those abundance of choices in defence. We have Kennedy and Balde to come back but we only have 3 fullbacks and one of them is Paul Telfer.
Up front Jvoh and Magic are stick on starters, with Miller and The Beats deputies. Even then we can also shove wee Maloney, McGeady and Rioirdon into forward roles if needed.
I said earlier that I believe this is the strongest squad we have had in years, maybe not the strongest 1st team, but the squad is about all of the same quality. GS will need to prove he has the coaching ability and decision-making ability to gel them together.
Big few months ahead………..

i agree our midfield does look strong and it will be interesting to see who plays and when.
i think lennon will surprise the people who are saying he isn't same player and shouldn't play as much just like he has over the past few seasons.
he is getting older but the guy is too good and too consistant a player not to feature heavily in my book.
Surely maloney too must be a regular starter when fully fit again as when he's not playing we miss his directness the way he runs at teams.
mcgeady has been our best player this season so far so it is going to be hard to fit everyone in but its much better like that than struggling to get 4 decent players to choose from.

Caught up with my reading last night and it seems Tommy “The gravedigga” Gravesen is by all accounts an attacking playmaker. Good on the ball and will grab games by the scruff of the neck and make things happen.
If that is the case and GS see’s him as that then him and Lennon could be in the middle more often.
But we have paid money for Jaro and i for one are looking for a reaction to his dropping against Hibs.
Question is will Shaun regain last season form? One season out of 5 doesn’t make a summer and he hasn’t signed a new deal yet…….

On the "who partners Gravesen in centre mid" debate i think it will be Jarosik.
The two of them can play as attacking mid and defensive mid so i reckon it will be up to them to rotate throughout the match. The two of them also fit in with Gordon's statement of "Bigger, Faster, Fitter, Stronger....
I then think it is between Mcgeady, Naka, Riordan, and Maloney to battle for the other two spots.
Add Pearo and Lennon as cover for Jiri and Tommy G and it kind of looks like two good players for every position.
Happy days!
Diferent tactics for away CL games and Ibrox i would imagine though. I'm sure Lennon will feature in a five man midfield for they games. Also Pearson is a great player to bring off the bench when the opposition is tiring because of his direct running.

Arctic- i agree said in the article i fancied a constantly changing midfield.
I think Tommy G is a stick on starter when fit and will be partner by Jaro more often than not at home.
Lenny will be dusted down for the away games and europe with Jaro maybe being played out wide.
We will play 1 up front in Europe i think stamford bridge proved what our away european formation would be.
Who plays in the point?
Kenny, Magic or Jvoh. Or does Kenny play wide in the 5 man midfield?
oh options so many options.....

i agree it is excellant having so many options.
tommy g might play on the right of midfield like he sometimes does for denmark.
it will be interesting to see the line-up on sat. i can't wait.
wonder how close bobo is to a return.
i think it is vital we get maloney signed up long term and i think there will be no problem as looks as if he wants to stay.
i think now the transfer window is shut it will allow them to get a new deal signed soon, i hope.

We can only put 11 on the pitch but it would be good if the players on the bench can do a turn if required. I seem to remember our southside rivals having `2 complete teams` and winning heehaw that season(97-98). It`s important to Celtic that they can find a winning blend and Pittodrie is a braw place to start. Come on the Bhoys!

Catching up tonight with all the posts as the IT Nazis have again restricted access at work.
TG is an attacking midfielder, my oldest friend is a Toffee and Derek Mountfield's Cousin no less) and agrees with me that it was always Carsley that was the holding midfielder.
What's Gordon gonna do? No idea, but I would rather go with the midfield that we had at Chelsea than start experimenting with Caldwell in there as some are suggesting at OT.
My little bro Evil just visited Chez Baldy as we get down to final preparations for my match on Saturday and reckons there is a rumour that Bazza Fergie hun may be forced to retire. Oh well we'll see.
Right will get back to you laters
Hail hail and KTF with more baldy nonsense.

Baldy- Agree going to old Trafford is no time to experiment with fanciful notions that Caldwell is a midfielder. Him and Mick will be the defensive pairing at OT and we will just need to hope that they have their heids screwed on.
Derek Mountfield? The mustachio wonder of Everton in the mid eighties? Brings back memories of my half Celtic half Everton hat that name.
Fergie retiring- would make him a martyr in the eyes of the r*ngers support but heard he played a full 60 mins yesterday.
Good Luck for your wedding on Saturday Baldy.
Ian- winning an away game this season would be a sign of progress. But any feel good factor generated by the signing of Tommy G needs to be harnessed again. Cracking press conference should do the trick.
Final word- did anyone see that Tartan Army twat with the Indian headdress and kilt on the TV yesterday? Nae wonder we try and distance our self’s from those tubes.
Doe a deer my ar*e.
