The Lotw Diary- A Doumbe Double???

It was a where were you moment? Maybe, not quite up there wie the shooting of JFK but one you will remember, if only for the oddness of it all. When Jean Joel Perrier Doumbe joined the ranks of such luminaries as McGarvey, McAvennie and Miller wie the worst winning goal since the 2005-cup final and one that ranks alongside the deflected effort in the 1980 riot cup final.

Now, while Dunfermline have been getting bummed up like they were Brazil 1970 by sum quarters, the bottom-line is they never had a shot at goal in the whole 2nd half. Which is amazing considering that Jim McIntyre that world-class journeyman was giving Elvis a torrid time. Elvis had his worst game in the hoops, which is saying something.

But I suppose the meeja have to dress the showpiece end of the season up. Hampden has a reputation of throwing a party and the DJ’s choice of tunes reflected this. “Song 2” by Blur was looped for the teams coming oot and Slim Shady’s “Lose yourself” got the same treatment before the presentation. Both were meant to be fore brooding and build the tension and expectation up like a John Barrie musical score. Both failed to do their joab. Both like the meeja coverage can be accused of trying to hard.

As the game wore on and the hoops took control there was only ever going to be one winner. We were keeping the baw, being patient and for the 1st time in months the expectation of us scoring was at ease wie oor support. Well, some. The Irish fella who wanted GS sacked for taking off Lenny was quickly shouted doon and told to behave.

For me Lenny going of was the watershed moment. A moment that changed the game. The Pars weren’t troubling us and the baw needed to get moved quicker from the middle through the channels for the beats pace to exploit a creaking backline. Enter Gary Caldwell to do just that. Sometimes it didnae work and his baws failed to reach their targets but at least instead of going sideways the baw was now travelling forward doon the channels for the wilder beats to charge onto.

This tactic is something we have been looking for. Something we hope will be there next season.

We won. We partied. We danced to the Pogues and the Frattellis. We celebrated saying cherrio to team 2 and hoping for better fair performance wise next year. We wish the same yield of two trophies and a guid run in Europe mind you!!!

Overall, we do deserve the double. 28 games unbeaten during the season is testimont to a team better than the rest. Over the last few months it has been poor but as I said on Friday we won’t remember that in years to come. Nostalgia and selective memory loss will see to that.

Player ratings and blurb aboot how I think they done…..

Arfur- Looked guid in the new top and didnae get his new shorts dirty. So a 6 out of 10 for that.

JJPD- Match winner, look uncomfortable in the 1st half. Looks ok going forward, defending I’m not to sure aboot. Could be a guid squad player will do well in the SPL but Europe I don’t know. 7 out of 10 mainly for the goal and having the guts to be in the opposition pen box wie 4 mins left.

Elvis- Terrible. Bit part player next season surely? 0 out of 10. ok, then 1 for turning up.

Mick-Elvis gave Mick- a torrid time. But he was solid and Mick like. 5 out of 10.

Naylor- great run and shot in the 2nd half. Crossing poor, looks tired to the jack in the box of earlier on. 5 out of 10.

McGeady- Never in the game. Again failed to show up when the chips where doon. One decent run and cross but the pars defender had to take him oot his pocket so he could collect his medal. 3 out of 10.

Paul Zico Hartley- eh, had a decent game for me when Lenny went of. Tracked back well but still has to do more. 5 out of 10.

Lenny- Correct decision to take him off. Disappointed as he would have been the change worked so he can’t complain. 4 out of 10.

Naka- quiet, tidy on the baw looks a shadow of his former self. 3 out of 10.

KM- Was oor best forward. Pace troubled the pars back line and he was tidy in possession. Should have scored when he injured himself. Scary thing is he maybe done enough to get kept on next season. 7 out of 10.

JVOH- Big man done nuthin bar chase scraps all day. Nae service but when he did get service he was well marshalled by Bambi and Skint Wilson. Questions remain aboot his ability and whether is he is worth the price tag. 4 out of 10.

The Beats- surprising choice instead of Riordan. But, KM was troubling the Pars backline wie pace so GS went like for like. His directness gave us purpose but I couldnae help thinking that he was looking at Burchill and seeing a similar career path..6 out of 10

Caldwell- as I said in the blurb thought his forward passing and baw retention ensured that there was going to be only one winner. Quicker mover of the baw than Lenny but long term future in that role? Unsure. 6 out of 10

GS-Nae rating for the manager, as i find it hard to give a manager a rating, but credit where credit is due. He called his subs right. He picked a team and bench that showed guts. Says a lot when Jaro and The Grav are nowhere to be seen. Ballsy decision to replace Lenny.

His team was set up to win the cup by being capable of grinding oot a result. There was no attempt to recapture form, or to attain fast flowing fitba. He trusted the 13 he put on the park to do just that. What that say’s aboot the rest of them then we will find oot in the next two months.

You`re a bit harsh on Elvis. how would you feel about losing every ball? He cleared the ball with 2 minutes to go and then had that wee run out from defence. So he was okay for the last few mins, 3 at least. Players who don`t kick the ball too well shouldn`t wear white boots!
I think that Jaro had a hamstring problem but I can`t be sure. At least Teddy got on the bench.
Caldwell didn`t contribute all that much but he raised the tempo, which was important. Anyway that was last season.

Ian

Well yer right he did go on a mad dash close to the end of the game and it must have been hard on him getting beat to every baw.

But he had a mare.

Caldwell, is the new Lenny. Not in the fitbaw sense but as in he will split the support. Some will say he is ok others that he is poor.

I thought he done his job which was to up the tempo.

Must admit i did think he was coming on for JJPD, who you could have took of as well at that point.

But wie Skoosh getting the number 8 will we see the beast of the caldo ever again in central mid....

I got that Spanish D R to read about the Celts winning the title. It was okay for the photos but the match report must have been taken from the Kilmarnock Standard!
I`m going to Italy in July but enjoy Spain too. I`ll make do with Cafe Andaluz next Saturday for Bajo con tomate pequeno, Butifarra negra y patatas bravas. (Sea Bass with small tomatoes, Black pudding in apple sauce and potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce.) I probably won`t go for these now. :-)
Listening to Motherwell v Kilmarnock on the radio, it`s really WBA v Derby Co but they`re going at it hammer and tongs. 0-0 up to now. Stephen Pearson is playing left midfield for Derby.

Heard a Derby fan- still think of them as the team from Murphy's mob-on Talksport this morning after the fantastic program which is fisherman blues.

The guy who presents that is a star. Two hours of tackle and trouting aboot.

Anyway, he was praising Pearson saying that the lose of the highly rated Giles Barnes- who rumour has it when he runs past defenders he goes "beep beep" like roadrunner- widnae effect them as Pearo is a more and capable replacement and a fantastic player.

Different Pearo than the one we knew towards the end of his hoopy days. Pearo a flying winger...

Scott Broon interview to look forward to on the news tonight...oh, and Celtic Tv review of the celebrations.

Like a lot of folk at this stage of the season, I have reached my saturation point and I am glad that I can now more or less switch off for the month of June and recharge the batteries.

One good thing is that we've got 2 decent new guys in already so that will help cut down on the endless transfer hype we have to go through every summer.

Not that we won't be keeping an eye on the old revolving door at CP, and it will be particularly interesting to see who's for the chop.
My guess is that we will cut our losses with Graveson, Jiri, Pressley, Majic and Bobo all heading for pastures new.
For a number of the other usual suspects (Miller, Beattie, Hartley, Caldwell, etc) their fate could depend on who comes thru the revolving door, as well as the need for a certain amount of stability from one season to the next.

As well as the "who's for the chop" list, there's also Naka and Artur, where we could be tempted to take the funny money currently being thrown about down south.
Hope we can resist that cos these guys are proven the CL level quality we are looking for.

Thankfully no harlem globetrotter tours are planned for the pre-season, which looks totally geared up to getting the bhoys ready for the CL qualifier in August.

I know I said I'd reached my saturation point but I just had a wee look at the qualification, seeding etc info on Bert's site and I got a wee twinge of the butterflies in the stomach when you realize how those two games will shape our season next year.

PS
Well done Del Pearo - a goal worth 60zillion notes, not a bad day's graft :0)

A sixty million pound goal. It makes me bloody sick. Congarts to Pearo but for a club the size of Derby to get that kind of dosh, while we are stuck wie pittance really bugs me. Oh, and that Billy Davis seems like a slekit wee beastie.

Six- wonder where Skippy was yesterday? Forgot aboot him but I must admit I huvnae got the same doubts aboot him than I had over KM at this stage last season. 17 goals he has scored. Hopefully he can add at least another 10 on top of that for us.

Agree, Jaro, The Grav, Balde will leave. Magic? I think unless we get a bid we canny really turn doon he will be around next year.

Nice to hear PL saying that Naka and Boruc are not for sale today. But…is he just courting big bucks?

Cl qualifier. In around a months time hopefully we should be in a position to take stock and have a look what kind of shape we are in.

You're right about the likes of Derby - money for nuthin & chicks for free.

If Skippy's any sense he'll be down under enjoying the sun.

About Majic - If we keep him another year he could leave for nowt at the end of that season. Looked uninterested whenever he played this year. If there are any takers I would cash in now.

About the Beats - Out of the Scotland squad after playing 20minutes on Saturday. Far too injury prone, I would let him go.

And do you think Elvis will still be here? He was taken to the cleaners on Saturday against the mighty Pars.

No sentiment in business is what I say(feeling a bit ruthless today).

Michel Platini has asked the G14 clubs to disband. Even a slow guy like me can spot that he owes too many favours after being voted in by the smaller countries.
I think that Gravesen will be sold but I wouldn`t be able to predict who else will leave. It depends on whether the club receives an offer.
Gordon Strachan seems to like Pressley and Hartley so I wouldn`t expect them to go. (I`ve seen them mentioned in posts in CQN)
Billy Davies is a chipmunk on caffine but he`s done well with Derby. Maybe we will be competing for players with the promoted teams to the EPL

Six- I read somewhere, think it was the ETIM Rumour mill, that any player widnae be allowed to run doon their contract into the final year. I canny see magic being offered another deal- he is just over 30 now- so if that’s the case then he will be offski.

Agree aboot the beats. Injury prone and inconsistent. As I said I wonder if he was looking at Burchill on Saturday and seeing his future.

Six, Ian- I can see Elvis being there. Just the same as I knew we would sign him when he became available. I don’t read oor manager correctly very often but I knew he would like Elvis as a player. Which means I can see maself here in a years time moaning aboot Elvis still getting a jersey….

Ian- Platini greased to many small countries palms in the election. His stance to the G14 is interesting. One I will be looking at wie interest as the G14 is increasing membership and I think we are soon to be involved.

I’m sure Jaro and The Grav will get offers and I would want us to recoup the Scott Broon fee by sale of them.

Also, I watched the real football factories international last night wie Danny “naughty” Dyer. It was in Argentina. Hope yer Mrs Jesi wisnny watching it as you will never get yer trip…..

Surely a player can run down his contract if he wants to alla Larsson, Miller and Maloney. Players have rights and if a boss has said no he could be in hot water from the SFA. It all depends on how much power a player has, what about our young reserves, doesn`t the club allow their contracts to run out before offering a new deal?
It`s now difficult to see the type of players that the club can buy but it`s position is better than a year ago when they were buying from Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSV! :-)

May 29, 2007 1:51 PM

Ian

Think what the club will do is offer the player a contract, if he turns it doon then they will make him available for sale. That’s if they think he is worth a contract. If not, which might be Magic’s case, they will make it known that they are willing to do business.

I would be happy if we bought from those calibre of clubs again but so far we have purchased from Hibs and Motherwell. And if ma memory serves me correctly this bought last year it had been Hibs and Wolves.

The only way is up……

So Buenos Aires is a bit dodgy then?

May 29, 2007 3:28 PM

I think Celtic are heading back that way. A mixture of homegrown, modest buys and a few big names. It has worked so far:-0

I had a look at a Liverpool site at lunch they are wanting between a £50m and £100m spend……we will be lucky if after sales if oor net spend is 10% of that figure.

Them and Us eh?

Yes Buenos Aires looked a bit dodgy....

May 29, 2007 3:46 PM
Blogger sixtaeseven said...

Kevin, you could say:
A mixture of homegrown, reformed huns, modest buys and a few big names.
Let's hope it all comes together next season.

As for spending power, we could be worse off (just look across the city) but most of the time in the CL we will be always be up against the rich kids and the gap is widening.

Buenos Aires a bit dodgy? Always guaranteed a bit of argy-bargy there I would think - just asked any of the aforementioned Lions!

May 29, 2007 4:01 PM
Blogger Keving said...

Six- I laughed oot loud at the reformed h*ns. Makes CP seem like rehab…..

The gap is getting bigger. We will be happy if we spent 10% of the LFC figure. The papers would call that a massive spent on oor part. In England oor net spend widnae keep Wigan afloat for a Mo Camara and a few Sheff Utd players.

We need to compete reg in the CL. We need to rear players to compete in the CL. Buy middle to lower market, improve then sell on for money..then start again.

Quite depressed now….

May 29, 2007 4:23 PM
Blogger sixtaeseven said...

We need to be in the CL on a regular basis but also, I think, without splitting the monies with another Scottish team. Hearts taking an early bath last year was great for us. Hopefully this year's second best will do us the same favour.

As for "sell on for money" - what price would we let Naka and Boruc go for? 8million each, maybe?

Even at that we need to find cheaper replacements and we risk losing the Japanese and Polish faithful.

It`s the way I tell them!

May 29, 2007 4:40 PM

Earlier on this season I was bracing maself for Naka and Boruc leaving. Now, looking at the EPL the top clubs are not looking for a goalie and if Arthur is true to his word then he won’t leave for a smaller club. None of the big 4 are looking for a goalie. So the Pole stays. Unless Inter come in….£6-8 million I think floats the boards boat.

Naka, I think, loves it here. He has had enough of playing in the lower reaches of a major league. We give him CL. We gave him awards. His boot company gives him mair money as his profile gets bigger. He also sells more merchandise playing for us. He is now 28 years old. A few years off looking for a move just to top up his pension fund as we are doing that quite well for him.

Another season for both? Maybe two for Naka. But money talks….

If they leave we will look to both markets again….

So Racing celebrate a game where their reputation as thugs came from? Nice to know their priorities lay just in winning and not in how it was achieved. Maybe we should think along the same lines…:-)

Glad everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Myself and senior Baldy found a bar in Ilfracombe, North Devon, where they put on the game and we were joined by two other Tims and a few other Scousers and Brummies for the game.

Prices for naka and Artur. For Naka we should be looking at around £15m for his marketing potential as well as his skills. Artur should be looking for £8-10m.

Must stop selling our players cheap to the EPL as if Spurs can spend £12m on a Welsh kid with one season in the Championship, they can afford to pay top dollar for our CL-Level players.

If we don't start demanding top dollar now, how are we ever going to compete with them if this buy and sell assett management policy is our way forward until we get a fairer share of media revenues.

Baldy- glad you caught the game.

Unfortunantly they don’t take into account marketing value when they sign players!!! Aye, but yer right. £12m for a one season wonder, in a league I think is not any better than the SPL. Hopefully Stan P transfer fee was the sign of things to come in getting what they are worth stakes.

Ian- Maybe I’m just missing the point. I agree wie what McBeath said. The game of world fitba is corrupt, he was asked a question and he answered truthfully. Why should FA’s in third world countries be any different from the governments that run them?

And do you trust Blatter? The guy who is doing all the shouting aboot McBeth was investigated for his FA’s World Cup ticket allocation ending up on the black market. Pot kettle black.

Just been posting on CQN about McBeth. Senior Baldy was at school with him at St. Mungo's and apparently he was never that interested in football.

Indeed while on holiday at the weekend, Dad was going on about him as he was in the English version of the Record that we were reading - yes we do read it as it is all we can get when you are away from web access, Scotland or London, where you have a chance of a Herald or a Scotsman at the Rail Stations.

Apparently he was into rowing, not wanting to get involved with the 'rough' sports. This coming from my old man, 5 ft 5" and not much of him. The guy just wasn't interested in Celtic, which apparently stood out like a sore thumb in this school in the late 50s early 60's - hence Senior Baldy remembers him so vividly.

Weird reading Paul's missive on the web, just after my Dad was sermonising about him and the merits of Gary Caldwell as a midfield enforcer next season over some of the worst Guinness, I have ever had the misfortune to drink.

Still result was great plus I wasn't driving so big smiles all round at the weekend for me.

Hail hail one and all

Ian, Blady- I have read his comments again and I still don’t see what the stooshie is aboot. Right he has been very stereotypical regarding third world countries but is that a crime? It’s the race card being played again when people feel it will benefit them.

History shows that third world countries and poor emerging nations are susceptible to corruption and deceit just the same as rich powerful countries. His only failing is that he never waited until he was in the office to say it and that he allowed the subject of racism to be breached.

But judging by CQN I would probably be called a racist bigot and ignorant for that view

He should have just said the British are not as corrupt as the rest of the world, more tea vicar…
