The Lotw Diary- On The Fringe Of A Cup Final

So I’m not going to try and comment on a game I never saw. In fact I never even heard it. Radio Tuechter decided in their wisdom that they would broadcast one game and that was from the Granite City. Setanta decided that the game wisnny even worth showing highlights off after the main event, which was qualification for the privilege to get tanned from a team of Latvian minnows.

So I’m driving blind. Can only go wie what I have read. So here goes, end of season game, surprisingly entertaining, Barney looked guid, Grav can get a taxi the now to the lower reaches of the EPL, will the real Paul Hartley please stand up and we lack that killer instinct in the last third.

Lacking the killer instinct? Story of the season. Lack of pace in the midfield? Story of the season. So nae need to go over them. Team two won’t see another pre-season but they still have this season to finish off. And is anyone else worried that they may struggle? I for one are not counting ma chickens. In fact I’m worried that the fox may eat ma chickens before Saturday night.

So yesterday, GS gave the fringe players the chance. A chance to fight their way into the reckoning for a Cup Final spot. Aye right, I have always said that injuries apart GS knew his cup final 11. The players also knew this. So why did we maybe expect the players to pick up the baton and perform? The fringe ones, on the park, knew they would be either picking splinters oot their behinds on the bench or sitting in the stand suited and booted.

We have entered the same situation as was MON forte. GS has the ones he trusts and the others will maybe get the nod, here and there when injuries and suspensions hit. Maybe this has something to do wie the manager being let doon badly by some this season.

For a manager to expect players who huvnae been getting a game when the club has been freewheeling doonhill recently to pick themselves up for a meaningless match in the hoop of maybe, just maybe sneaking a cup final spot is just sheer folly.

Again, the players should have professional pride they should know that cup finals don't come round every year and passing up the chance to maybe starting in one, makes me question attitude. But professional pride should have kicked in to the mainstays over the last few weeks. It didnae. The mainstays have made us question them and hope for a successful end to the season rather than expect one.

Professional pride should have also kicked in when the fringe players realised that they weren’t just playing for a cup final jersey they were playing for their futures and some should be looking over their shoulders and be as anxious as I am regarding ma phone not ringing to give me cup final tickets. A taxi is a comin and it’s been upgraded to a seven seater.

So, from yesterday who were the fringe player’s wie hopes of maybe playing next week? And who are now packing their bags, IMO mind nae rumours or whispers only ma opinion, and looking at summer holidays packing boxes and moving hoose.

JJPD- The guy has done well recently. Done well without being spectacular. Likes a tackle and is comfortable on the baw. Expect him to be replaced by Caldwell for the CF before not getting a contract. A life in the fizzy pop league beckons.

JFK- Mair hope than anything here that he may have sneaked in instead of Elvis. Pre-season is massive for him as the CF has come to soon and GS’s insistence that Elvis is a player means that he gets the nod to add his “experience” to the CF line up. If only he could add talent.

The Grav- Hope he has rented accommodation wie a big plasma screen, as I think that’s the only way he will see the cup final. Estate agents doon sooth are probably being called today wie him looking to buy. Tommy it should have been great. Instead you have been more Tommy Cooper than Tommy Gravesan.

O’Dea- Never a left back but see JFK for the Elvis problem.

Barney- never really had any chance did he?

Beattie- never really had any chance did he? Maybe he should get used to Easter Road’s surroundings. After KM’s last ooting he is now shootie in for a starting 11 slot but only because The Beats performances or non-performances have made him the better option. If only Craig could stay on his feet long enough to shootie in. If only magic would wake up from his slumber.

Riordan- Scored, looks dangerous and compliments JVOH well. Probably booked his place on the bench and also probably ensured he will get game time. Strikers need to score. Derek does where others don’t. But does the future look guid when KM is above you in the pecking order?

So the cup final team picks it’s self. Those who didnae perform or turn up at Ibrox- 2nd half team- get the chance to redeem themselves. I will travel mair in hope than expectation. It’s been that sort of season.

Well summed up. I heard it on BBC Scotland web site and it wasn`t pleasant. Hartley, Gravesen were they mentioned?
O`Dea is seriously slow and he was tired by the time Sproule was on.
2nd half team at Ibrox? Aaaarrrrrgh!
I may be ready to settle for the league. :-)

O'Dea, feel sorry for. Against Killie he was caught out for their goal and yesterday looks or sounds like he was at fault for both yesterday.

When he is at CB his positional sense i think makes up for the lack of pace.

Yes, the second half team at the brox...maube they are not calling me coz they know how bad it could be....

A surprise selection for Saturday would be JoeDoumbe. But, even although he has played well in his 3 or 4 games for us, I don't think GS will give him the nod despite us being criminally short of full backs. With Naylor back, the other full back position will probably be filled by Caldwell.
Probably JFK will miss out and I hope to see Mick and DO'D. However, we know that GS will pick Pressly. He will probably find a position for Hartley as well.
Miller will probably start alongside Jan, as we are criminally short of strikers :o(

In short, we probably won't see our current best team take the field, it will be medals for the pals.

Ach well, as long as it's winners medals.

Kevin, good to hear you got fixed up and thanks for keeping me in mind about tickets. The only other glimmer of hope for me is a friend of my brother in law. If anything transpires on that front, I'll let you know.
Thanks again!

Heard a wee whisper that tickets are now on general sale to season ticket holders. But speaking to ma faither in law last night all the supporters clubs have got plenty.

If all else fails i think you will get a ticket on the day.

Back to the fitba

Doumbe- unsure if GS was ref to him when he was talking aboot failures after the game. But GS praised Caldwell so like Elvis i feel this is a gimmie.

Hartley- yes, again, form and the best for the team won't come into it. He will line up alongside Lenny and i hope finds form.

I would play Riordan. 7 goals in 10 starts is a record better than Kenny Millers. But again as i said KM didnae too to badly against the sheepies.

His pace could stretch the pars backline but i think Riordans awareness and savvy could do that as well. Miller is all pace and enegry, Riordan is natural and instinctive.

Thing is, i'm afraid that GS disappointment was aimed at Deek, Beats and Grav as really the other fringe players never had a hope of playing.

Only saw the huddle last night but they highlighted Barney. Some great close control, skill and willingness to run at people.

Was watching thinking has he done enough to maybe get some game time if things are going well....

I had a wee look at the ticket office part in the website and I think whoever wrote it could be questioned. (?)
They talk about the most committed supporters. Well I could assure them that listening to away games on Radio Scotland shows a lot more commitment than going to the game. I`ve tried both and I know which one saps the energy and leaves me with a pounding headache. The most uncommitted I`ve been this season was when I was at the Motherwell away game at the end of last year.:-)
Okay I don`t really fancy going to away games, I love the footy but going by public transport is a bad experience unless it`s properly policed and that doesn`t happen! I`ve had my turn but that was a while ago.
As I said last week all season ticket holders have shown more than enough commitment to have a chance of a cup final ticket.

Ian- the most committed supporters in Celtic’s eyes are the ones who use there wee team cards to buy merchandise. I said that right back at the start of this season. For the ticket office they will see you taking tickets for the arse end of beyond as being committed.

Thing is, taking tickets for Killie, Murderwell, Dundee Utd etc is not helping Celtic. You are just giving money to these clubs and not benefiting Celtic. But some have principals. Some won’t go to those games or can’t go to those games.

But, as you point out, those guys will buy season books and try and go to all home games, even the diddy cup ones.

I think Celtic are going doon the road of awarding guys who are on the DD home ticket scheme. Even if you don’t go to the game they get yer money. This, the cup final ticket ballot, for me is the 1st instance of them pushing this as they see dwindling attendances at these games.

Now, that is beneficial for guys like maself, who in days of auld was a week in week outer, but now only goes to the occasional away game. If it wasn’t for a mistake I would have came out in the ballot. I know that.

Next season, I will continue to play the % game. I will pick and choose my games. Oor away support is dwindling as well.

Long and short of it I agree Ian there should be a number of tickets balloted between SB holders who don’t meet the 1st round of criteria.

Puzzling thing is Ian how did you not come out in the ballot for the CF? Your on the DD scheme and went to the semi? Guys wie less ticks in the book than you got tickets.

Sorry meant to add that listening to radio tuecther all season you probably deserve a medal...one weekend was enough for me.

Glad of ma setanta, hell after Sunday i'm even glad of Craig Burley and Scott Broon. Well, maybe not.....

I got semi final tickets from Hampden. They send me a Freepost envelope and I know where I`ll be sitting. Obviously I`m not really bothered except by the use of the word `fans who are most committed to following the team` Surely they have been already blessed with tickets for I*rox and S`castle!
:-)

Doh!! While i'm glad of Scott Broon, it should have been, JVIH bestie pal, Scott Booth.

yes you are probably right, but then after oor last performance at i*rox then they can be committed all they want.

Strange thing is apart from Tynie and the senkie i was offered away tickets for every other away ground last year. Not from Celtic i may add.

Since i only attended 2 away games,2 CIS cup games, a semi final, CL quarter final home and away, 3 CL hame games and 37 and a half league games.....i suppose i'm not committed.

In terms of guys i know i'm not. I know guys who have a full monty of ticks in the book....they still stay wie there maws and have understanding wifes right enough...

DOH, Again....17 and a half league home games...not 37 and a half...

think i need a beer....

Don't know if I fit into the category of "committed supporter".
Living abroad, I haven't been to any games this season.

But I have seen just about every game either on internet (Channnel67 or UEFA site for CL games) or a few games in Celtic pubs in Paris.

As I know is that I feel elated when we win and play well and nearly "committed" suicide when we played crappy football and lost a few times this season.
Do I qualify?

And, erm, should I feel guilty if I do somehow manage to acquire a ticket for the CF?

So many questions, so little time
:o)

sixtae,
I think that you have captured the spirit of a supporter. Commitment can`t be explained by how much is spent. Emotion has to be part of it!
Come on the Bhoys!

My sister just texted some good news - 2 tickets for the final!!!
No details - just that we've got them. Feeling lucky, not guilty!!!

So thanks again Kevin for keeping me in mind about tickets.
And thanks Ian for your last comments.

Got a feeling there will be a show on on Saturday :o)
Up for the Cup!
