The Lotw Diary- The signing of Broon leaves this malcontent wie not much to moan aboot…

For a board malcontent like maself, whom since the infamous “sack the board” wars of the early 90’s disnny trust chief exec, chairmen or anyone in power, then the fact that they are signing £4.5 million cheques and thus showing some signs of ambition leaves me wie not much to moan aboot.

Yer arse, Mrs G disnny call me Victor for nothing so here goes. I think we have paid £2.5 million pound too much for Scott Broon. Hibs have played us like a fiddle and got over the odds for a player wie it all still to prove. I really do feel once Hibs had courted the bidding the war then we should have withdrew oor interest and let him go to Boro or Everton. Bottom line is once the price started rising or friends over the Clyde weren’t going to be interested so by us not signing him then it wisnny strengthening them.

There you go I feel better. But we have signed him and I am pleased we have signed him. It just shows how the market place has changed. The last promising young midfielder we purchased from a Scottish club we paid well under a million for. Now, we are paying over 4 for the same potential. We also paid over the odds for a 31 year old from a Scottish Club in the winter.

I’m sure GS will admit that he has paid over the odds for him, but once the EPL clubs flexed their muscles then the price was always rising. We offered over £4 million for both Thomson and Broon in the winter. We boiked at paying £2million for Thomson alone, which maybe shows you what one was the more highly rated by those suits in the know.

The signing has once again fired the focus on oor friends on the south west of the city. 3 signing targets have now joined the Hoops. Skippy, Hartley- who was on his way to Murray Park to sign, oh and yes he does look like John Greig- and now the saviour of der h*n midfield Broon.

If they thought they got one over on us wie Thomson, I think we have proved that they are miles behind now. I wish it didnae come doon to us gloating over the fact that we have mair money. I wish we had proved on the park- esp the last two derby games- that we we’re miles ahead on the field, I wish we could have played attractive fitbaw to make the doubters who have called us the worst Celtic team ever to win the league eat their words.

Money disnny buy success and as it has been proved can easily disappear as quick as we land it. We require an infrastructure, which ensures that when the massive spends are not an option we have faith in oor scouting, youth system and coaching staff. Even when you have the ability to have a massive spend if you don’t have faith in your infrastructure then see King Kenny and Digger Barnes dream team.

But, that’s a worry for another day. Last night like vultures circling oor pray we gathered round the radios to, hopefully, listen to Derek Johnstone resigning for his claim the Broon going to ra gers was a done deal. Nae danger, the big gallot stuck to his guns, mentioned gentleman’s agreement- highly illegal them are they no?- and went on to say that his pal, Wally, will get better than Broon for less. In this he was backed up by Hugh jump the dyke Keevins another who panders to Murray’s flute.

It was siege mentality radio, one which proves once and for all that Radio Clyde is nothing sort of a r*ngers party political broadcast, fronted by fools. I will never listen to that station again. In fact this morning I changed the office radio from Clyde to the lesser evil real.

So with Lawell signing big cheques will the Hoops now buy from the top end? If we are willing to pay £25,000 a week for potential surely we will be willing to pay that for proven ability? If we are willing to shell out big bucks on potential then again the same rule should apply.

A £6 million fee for a Bellamy type should no longer be boiked at. A few million for a Komas or Barton should no longer be frowned upon. These fees and wages will all be negated by departures. The books will balance.

Got the new Celtic Leoes de Lisboa tastic merchandise catalogue through the door yesterday. Aye, want me to spend money but not gie me tickets the urchins. But I digress, the photo on the front has the Lisboa team alongside the current Celtic team. The current team has some faces missing, Lenny apart, I mean he widnae want to get left oot the photo shoot, so is it a pointer to the future?

The players included are, Lenny, Magic, Mick, JVOH, O’Dea, Sno, Wilson, Naka, Tommy G, Arfur, Mark Broon, Elvis, Deek, Aiden, Hartley and the Beats. Those missing, apart from JFK, widnae be missed if a taxi was forthcoming.

Forza The Hoops.

Perhaps Lenny will now stay for pre season and sort this Broon guy out! :-)
Siege mentality radio! I like that, some great jingles no doubt. Meanwhile I was listening on Five live to Billy the chipmonk Davies. Boy is he boring! He must have gone to manager bland comment school and listened!

I posted on the last thread and didn't see the new one - there must be jet lag on the net.

Anyway, I had the same feeling about the transfer fee, but as mentioned on the last thread it works out at less than 1million per year. And is it too cynical to speculate that he could be moved on after three or four seasons at a profit?
Another perspective on the fee - how much did we fork out for Virgo and he's hardly kicked a ba' and not likely to be offloaded easily?

Also I like the idea of getting our targets in early - one thing I hate is a long summer wi' all the crap speculation and then end up on the last day putting in last minute bids for numpties, who take half a season to get their suitcase unpacked.

The CL qualifier at the start of the season might have something to do with that, what d'you think :o)

Was that Les Verts swansong or did they scrape those heights again in the Platini years?

Yer not cynical I was thinking the exact samething wie regards to profit.

Big John Virgo, I’m sure, that fee has not been paid in full yet due to the majority of it being based on appearances and such. But I remember when we signed him as I said he must be ok as he was in 4-4-2 top 6 players in the fizzy pop league….

So do I like the idea of getting oor targets early that means when I’m lying by the pool, sleeping off the few beers from the night before the urge not to buy the daily record will not come over me to see if we have signed Dwight Yorke….

I’m sure getting the players bedded in before the CL qualifier is the aim. GS wants his big guns loaded and ready….unlike a balmy night in Bratislava.

Re Les Verts - I think that probably that was as good as it got for them (but the good thing was that they put the huns out the cup that year).
Later with the likes of Platini in the team the went on to win the odd league or cup before getting caught up in money scandels and relagation every other year.

However, they still are immensely popular with all fitba fans in France. I think mainly because they were THE team that gave french fitba' any credibility at all, and as you know, as soon as Platini went to Juventus football just took off in France never to look back.

Funny though how the french clubs(even Lyon nowadays) don't cut it in Europe when they have talent to burn as witnessed by international teams since the Platini era.

Name to look out for is Nasri of marseilles who is only 19 and is being hailed as the new zidane (and from what i've seen of him on the box I wouldn't bet against it).

I have watched quite a bit of French fitbaw on Setanta and , you will probably argue wie me six, I don’t think it is up to much. I have seen some poor games, I have also seen poor games from Spain, England and Italy right enough, and I sometimes wonder how managers can sign guys from the league.

Apart from the players that stand out, Drogba a few years back, Ribery and any of the Lyon team, for me the rest are much the same all have the same qualities. Don’t know how many Balde like clones and Drogba like clones- not as guid as both of them- plying their trade in Ligue 1.

I probably have been unlucky wie the games I have watched so I will be happy for you to put me right.:-)

Will watch oot for that guy Nasri.

Anyway, what a festival of Fitbaw that was last night. A great game. Espanyol were like Celtic in oor final. A team built on spirit, tactical know how and not too short of ability against technically better opponents. Espanyol knew as long as there was only a goal in it they could peg back the better team. Just like 2003.

Sending off probably lost the chance they had of winning it in open play. Just like 2003.

Why do us Scots love gallant losers?

Oh Celtic Tv last night, highlights of the reserve game earlier this week.

Get Teddy Bjarnson in the team for Sunday. He looked guid. More worryingly him and finbar haven’t signed the contracts on offer yet. According to the way Wullie McStay was talking he only expects Teddy to sign……

Cracking teams and great football. Those supporters were great too. Plenty of enthusiasm without any neddish element.:-)
I`m still glad that I didn`t go, the extra time would have made it too long a night! :-)
Maybe I`ll start to support a Spanish team.:-/ Not too big a team though.
Get Teddy ready! It would be careless to lose him but they may.

I like the comment regarding the neddish element. Luckly for the Spanish wearing shellsuits wie white socks over the bottoms wie a pair of mangled Reebox Classics all topped of wie a bottle of coatbrigg's finest husnae reached the spanish yoof yet.

Unluckly for them the Neddish element pollutes the costa's and the party isles from June onwards.

It's the Scottish blight the ned. And watching the hoops brings us into contact wie young and old neds alike!!!

Support a spanish team? Like Villareal?

Get ready Teddy indeed.

From Daniele in Milan. He didn`t get a ticket for Athens but he is going in hope. He said that 10,000 tickets have been distributed to ultras, season ticket holders, supporters clubs and travel agencies and 7000 have disappeared! He didn`t get a ticket because he`s only had a season ticket since 1996. Not long enough.
Get ready Teddy!

Enjoyed last night's game but the sending off, which I thought harsh, meant that the wee team went from dominating proceedings to hanging on.
The game was played in a great spirit and although the rivalry was clear there was never any going to be any bother off or on the field.

What I liked was the winning team lining up for the losers and the "traditional" cup presentation. I think I mentioned on a previous thread here that I would much prefer that to the staged thing we get for the SPL winners.

It was great to see big Billy awarding the medals, he had a wee word to say to everyone of the players, obviously knowing how both the losers and winners of a European cup final would be feeling. He really was wearing his heart on his sleeve.
Well done Ceasar!!!

1996? And that is not long enough!!! The 7000 disappearing is a worry, who has got them i wonder.

Heard yesterday that all the Man Utd 1st team squad got 26 tickets each for the FA Cup Final.

It's always the same, when it comes to big matches. Some gadge from the ticket office was on Celtic Tv last night explaining the unexplainable ticket allocation system for the cup final.

Seems to be that guys in the DD home ticket scheme have got pref but some who went to all the games listed huvnae had a sniff.

Now the gadge was saying that they have allocated them fairly which judging by the stories i'v been hearing is not the case.

Too many fat cats take their share. And it's in ma quest for a ticket that these fat cats and sponsors are being asked.

But ho hum it's a Moderen World as Mr Weller once said.

Well said aboot big Billy. How a Celtic captain should act on and of the field.

Now, was that a wee dig at Lenny i wonder....

Meant to say the gadge from the CPTO didnae say the people on the DD home scheme got pref. A wee quick poll of who got tickets on ma bus and ma father in laws bus showed that 95% were on the DD scheme.

I`m still thinking about which Spanish team to support. If I supported Malaga I could get there in time for afternoon games using the Globespan flight. Unfortunately the Malags are in div 2 at present, there is the advantage that O`Neills in Malaga a shows the Celtic matches. I must consider Espanyol also or even Atletico de Madrid. My wife will be okay with this because I keep going on about us going to Buenos Aires on holiday and that`s a bit scary for her. :-)
Back to the UEFA final, the ref was a bit quick with the card, the tackle got some of the ball and was along the ground. Sounds like Bobo`s second booking. These `top` refs are top because they favour the bigger team. That is the corruption of professional football, money can buy success.
Team for Sunday will have some new faces but I expect that the cup final team has been chosen.
Come on the Bhoys!

"We have a number of players to bring in and we don't have that level of money for one player. It has nothing to do with the club's financial situation."

As somebody said on CQN this week:
The Celtic tank is parked on Murrays' lawn.
Ha ha ha, Love it !

For the cup final today, suppose it has to be MU, the lesser of the two evils -- but it could be worth watching :o)

Saw the news last night and heard Wallies statement. He has been bleating like a wee lamb that he husnae got dosh for weeks now.

Still reckon they will spend. But again it will be what i call a PLG level spend. Few cash deals the others bosmans.

Anyway, enough of those evil ones. What's the patter wie Gordies ginger and grey beard? It's not big and not clever wee man.

Due to it being ma gran's 80th birthday we are all going for a wee meal in Kirkie- faither G comes from Kirkie- today. Meal booked for 3pm. So might miss the cup final.

As long as there is Steak Pie and lager...

Man U are the lessers of 2 evils but i fancy Chelsea 1-0 wie Joe Cole scoring. 60-1 that is....

But i won't be bothered of auld rid eyes is celebrating. I HATE JOSE that much.

AC Milan say that all 17000 tickets are sold but the remaining 7000 were sold via named travel agents. Poor Daniele, he deserves a ticket but he prefers budget travel.
Yesterday`s Herald had a large article about the dark side written by that wee Darryl character who wears silly tee shirts on the telly. :-/ `Who`s on Walter`s shopping list?` Me, me, me! :-)

Dunfermline were poor. But you still canny read too much into it. A lot of the players will have had a hard week wie regards to new contracts etc.

Professional pride should kick in next week, hopefully the same as the hoops.

Anyway coming to work today i saw the dirties waiting on their bus to Aberdeen. Had to laugh at them.

Then i remembered in the 90's going to aberdeen on the last day of the season after we had won hee haw. Great day oot we had. Remember the hoops singing American Pie for some unknown, still, unknown reason.

Anyway, FA Cup, forgetable attraction it could stand for. Glad i didnae see it all.

I suppose that our game is the one that doesn`t affect the European place. It`s a bit of a nonsense that the 4th team in the SPL is behind a team that gets to the cup final but it`s not our decision about that.

The match yesterday: watched 15min then did a bit of DIY, coming back with 5 to go before half time and full time and watched a wee bit of extra time. The only good thing I can say about the game, is that I got one or two things off my "list". It was that bad.

Hopefully our cup final will be more of a fitba game.

By all accounts Dunfermilne ware poor yesterday but they were obviously resting a number of players, so as you say nothing to read into it.

As for today, I will be disappointed if Aberdeen don't win.

Overall Hibs deserved their win (15 corners or so to our 2 or 3, says it all).
Don't think we even tested the worst goalie in the league!
We can play ok (not great!) in the middle of the park but run out of ideas whenever we get anywhere near the area .
McManus, Kennedy, O'Dea should never play together in a back four! Surely Caddis or Cuthbert could got a game today?

Brown - couldn't be faulted for the goals, otherwise looked competent

Doumbe - looked good again today

McManus - usual competent performance

Kennedy - looked good again today

O'Dea - he is never a full back and Hibs exploited our weakness down the left (have a look at the two hibs goals).

Bjarnason - looks a player, could be like a new signing!

Gravesen - we may have seen the last of him - huge disappointment today & all season (subbed by McGeady in second half - Aiden's best work was when he was backtracking, says it all)

Caldwell - I am still not convinced, today didn't help in defensive mid role, could easily have been sent off

Hartley - I am still not convinced, today didn't help, pretty anonymous

Beattie - I am still not convinced, today didn't help (subbed by Sheridan after handbags with Jones late on)

Riordan - scored a great goal from an "impossible" angle, but not much else, is it enough?

This match won't have much bearing on the cup final, but you just get the impression it's going to be lab--o--ri--ous.

Anyway, thank goodness Scott Brown is coming our way!

Don't think we will see that back 4 again and maybe O'Dea was hung oot to dry as you say he is not a full back.

Sounds like the performance lack what we have been lacking for months now.
